This was confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio in Parliament this week, upon questions by Deputy Leader of the HRPP Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo, in Parliament this week.

Fonotoe sought clarification on whether payments for outstanding tax (arrears) are cancelled, or whether these outstanding taxes are to be paid in full.

Furthermore, Fonotoe cited complaints against the new policies on the renewal of business licenses. The Deputy Prime Minister took the floor and clarified the process of renewal for business licenses is outlined in the relevant legislation and regulations of the Ministry.

Additionally that there are records of businesses with unpaid debts that are increasing and the Ministry should be vigilant in following up to ensure these are paid.

He further noted that the government looks at trying to increase their revenue from these unpaid taxes/debts but it is also the interest of the government to assist business owners, and encouraged the business community to also be mindful and assist the government.

According to Tuala the outstanding taxes, usually occurs due to dishonesty of businesses in paying their loans and licenses and emphasised that the private sector has a total of 80 million debt to the government and it is in this regard, it is a reminder for the companies to ensure they pay their tax on time.
