In News from Pago, the American Samoa Government is proceeding with its plan for a new hospital to provide specialized treatment at the Tafuna Industrial Park.
This was confirmed by Deputy Director of Health, Vesi Talalelei Fautanu Jr in response to questions from KVZK TV.
Initially, this project was overseen by the LBJ hospital, however, Governor Lemanu Palepoi Sialega Mauga appointed the Department of Health to oversee the implementation phase of the new hospital two months ago.
Fautanu told KVKZ news the timeframe for this project should be completed by 2024.
In April the Committee’s summary report submitted to the governor was leaked to the media citing options, a long-term acute care facility either within the current hospital facility or as a free-standing facility.
The advisory committee noted that a free-standing speciality hospital “is likely to fail” and would have “high operational costs.”
The Advisory Committee was appointed by the Director of Health Motusa Tuileama Nua to look into the proposed project.
In January during a Cabinet meeting, Lt Governor Talauega Eleasalo Vaalele Ale said the new hospital is a priority on the administration’s agenda and that providing top-notch healthcare for the people of American Samoa is a must.
