The Ministry of Police and Prisons arrested 12 men from Lefagaoalii yesterday. This is in relation to the alleged beating and tying of an elderly man to a stick and carrying him into the village against his will.
Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo confirmed this in response to questions from Radio Polynesia.
He said six High Chiefs and six untitled men were arrested and charged. A total of 11 were released on their own recognizance, as they are charged with assault and false imprisonment, and one remains in custody for attempted murder.
All the 12 men will appear in court on 25 September, 2023.
A video of the elderly man being carried by four men while tied to a stick has garnered much criticism, questioning the Christianity of Chiefs and their decision-making.
In the meantime, Police Commissioner Auapa’au reminded villages that no one is above the law, and there will be consequences when violated.
