Dental hygienist’s volunteer work in Samoa continues

Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital Dental team along with JICA Volunteer Yukiko Motoe paid dental care checks and treatment during the week to schools on the North-Western side of Upolu.
Last month their school outreach program this time reached Tuana’i Primary School, Sagaga District.
According to a 2022 Country profile by the World Health Organization (WHO) on oral health in Samoa, the prevalence of untreated caries (cavity) for deciduous teeth in children aged 1 – 9 years is a staggering 46.6%. This statistic highlights the urgent need for dental care and education in our community.
JICA volunteer Yukiko worked with her colleagues to provide dental care treatment to 75 schoolchildren.
The dental team leader emphasized Yukiko’s invaluable contribution to the team’s dental outreach efforts.
JICA will continue to share its activities and raise awareness about the importance of dental health.
