Inter-island flights between the two Samoa will now be routed between the Pago Pago International Airport and Fagalii Airport, when it opens for operation next Monday 29 May.
This was confirmed by several of Samoa Airways staff to Radio Polynesia.
Ulia Construction workers have completed upgrading the landing strip with works underway for the parking lot.
The re-opening of Fagalii Airport has been highlighted on several occasions during the Atoa o Samoa talks between Samoa and American Samoa governments.
The ASG has been keen on the re-opening of Fagalii as its close to town versus landing at the Faleolo International Airport.
This would be the third time Fagalii has re-opened for operation after it was shut down. The first time it was closed down was in 2005, and it was reopened in 2009; 12 years it was closed again in 2020 by the former administration citing safety reasons.
Three years later it will re-open again.
When it was closed down, the area was taken over by the Ministry of Police and Prisons for its traffic division, however last August it was transferred to Samoa Airport Authority.
Prior to taking office, the FAST party assured they would re-open Fagalii, for convenience’s sake.
