The Fire and Emergency Services Authority and the Ministry of Police and Prisons have officially called off their search for a 22-year-old man from Poutasi Falealili who went missing Friday night.
Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo told Radio Polynesia they received the call for assistance on Saturday, and Police acted accordingly.
According to Police, the 22-year-old from Falealili went to sea with other men from his village palolo hunting. However, the strong currents struck their canoe, and it capsized; others made it to shore, but the 22-year-old.
He said the search was called off Monday evening as efforts were unsuccessful.
Auapa’au raised concerns over using small boats or canoes for fishing purposes, noting that if its high tide, it will not end well.
