The Head of the Paediatric has dismissed reports that two babies have died as a result of COVID-19.
Papalii Dr Tito Kamu said it is important to put a stop to false reports as it only creates panic in the Community.
“I can confirm no babies have died from COVID, there is only one infant in the Intensive Care Unit of the COVID Ward and she is recovering.
“As of this morning she has awoken from her induced coma and has been taken off the ventilating machine and the great news is that she’s breathing on her own,” explained Papali’i.
The baby suffered from severe pneumonia and had to be placed on a ventilator for treatment.
Papalii said he’s still in contact with the Paediatrician in New Zealand Dr Fiona Mills who has been assisting with the medical treatment of the infant and every day looks promising.
However, the doctor said the baby still has a long way to go before she is fully recovered.
The Doctor told Radio Polynesia there is a need for the public to be cautious in spreading false rumours as it doesn’t do any good for anyone especially when Samoa is facing the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are doing everything we can to make sure our babies and everyone infected will not die from COVID.
“However it is a collective effort and one way to assist is for everyone to do their part, by adhering to health measures, getting vaccinated, washing hands regularly and not congregating in large crowds to slow down the spread of the COVID,” said the Doctor.
He reminded parents that if their children have COVID give them paracetamol to help with the fever and also take lots of fluid and Vitamin C or lemonade juice as well as coconut water.
