In a statement issued today, the Ministry says these viruses are contagious with expected symptoms such as fever, runny nose, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle and joint pain, and a general feeling of unwellness and fatigue.

“The general public is reminded that the flu spreads very easily, with the rapid transmission in crowded areas, such as schools, workplaces, and other public places such as supermarkets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Infectious droplets are dispersed into the air and can infect persons in range who breathe these droplets.”

The Ministry says other symptoms of the flu are dry cough which can be severe and last two or more weeks.

“Most people recover from the fever and other symptoms within a week without requiring antibiotics or medical attention.”

The health advises the public that these symptoms can cause severe illness or death, particularly among the high-risk groups such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious medical conditions.

The Ministry urges the public to cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, practice social distancing, wash hands regularly, use hand sanitizer, wear facial masks and take oral paracetamol or panadol seek medical doctor’s advise on the dosage of paracetamol for children.

Students are urged to remain at home when sick.
