International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fact-Finding and Programming Mission to Samoa – Meeting with the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS)
The IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation and the Division for the Asia and the Pacific is undertaking a fact-finding and programming mission in Samoa from 17th – 20th July 2023. IAEA representatives – Gashaw Gebeyehu Wolde (Section Head, TCAP) and Javier Romero (Programme Management Officer) visited SROS on the 19th of July 2023, meeting with the management team and undertaking a tour of the laboratory facilities.
The scope and mechanisms of IAEA assistance were discussed and areas for technical collaboration were identified, to support SROS’ research mandate as aligned to national development priorities.
Samoa officially became a member of the IAEA in April 2021 and has benefited from IAEA support and assistance in the peaceful use and application of nuclear technology to support growth and development at the national level.
SROS received crucial equipment and tools for diagnostic testing support through IAEA’s COVID-19 assistance programs.
Samoa has also benefited from training courses, including current and prospective technical capacity-building opportunities for SROS staff.
This partnership has been enhanced through the support of the National Liaison Officer (NLO) for Samoa to IAEA – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
