The highly anticipated Islands of Origin Rugby League Tournament launched Monday night, marking its fourth consecutive year of thrilling competition between the Tumua Maroons and Pule6 Blues.

This annual event has become a staple in Samoa’s rugby league community, drawing in numerous big names and creating unparalleled excitement.

The tournament’s inaugural year saw the Tumua Maroons emerge victorious, claiming the title with their exceptional skills and determination.

However, the past two years have witnessed a shift in fortunes, as the Pule6 Blues secured back-to-back victories, establishing themselves as a formidable force on the rugby field.

According to Laulu Filifilituna Tovio, the Tournament Director, this year’s edition has attracted an impressive lineup of renowned figures within Samoa’s rugby community. The Islands of Origin Rugby League Tournament is unique as it transcends the club level, elevating the competition to a grander scale.

Tovio further emphasized that many players from various clubs eagerly vie for the opportunity to participate in the Islands of Origin tournament each year.

The allure of representing their origins and showcasing their skills on such a prestigious platform is an irresistible prospect for these talented athletes. As the tournament unfolds, all eyes are on the Tumua Maroons. Eseroma Lewer, Captain of the Tumua Maroons, expressed their determination to reclaim the coveted title of Islands of Origin champions.

The pressure is palpable as they strive to overcome their recent setbacks and prove their mettle against the
formidable Pule6 Blues.

The Pule6 Blues is looking forward to their return to the big Island of Savaii after missing out last year, according to their captain, Ionatana Tino. The Island of Origin will also feature the women’s 9 competition, and this is their second year, with Pule6 Blues claiming the first year’s title last year.

The tournament will begin with the first game being played at ACP Stadium Lotopa on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023. The second game will occur at Gataivai Primary School Field in Savaii on Saturday, September 2nd, and the final will be held at ACP Stadium Lotopa on September 9th, 2023.

The President of Samoa Rugby League, Fiu Faaolatane Ponifasio Vasa, delivered the keynote speech for the tournament and challenged the players to fight for the win. “Don’t be afraid to lose. Losing can prepare you to win”.

He emphasized that losing can be a valuable learning experience that prepares teams for future victories. The Islands of Origin Rugby League Tournament showcases exceptional athleticism and celebrates cultural heritage and unity. It serves as a testament to Samoa’s rich rugby tradition and its ability to unite communities through the spirit of competition.
