The Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management (JPRISM) Phase II is currently conducting a pilot project with the Samoa Recycling and Waste Management Association (SRWMA) to promote plastic recycling in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
This is according to a press statement issued this week.
“Brand new Crushing machine and Extruder machine were imported from Japan to Samoa last year, and both machines have started the operation from July 2022.
“The Extruder machine is capable of producing two different end products. The first is pellet manufacturing, where pellets are recycled plastic in the form of grains of rice.
“Pellets are the raw material for the manufacture of all recycled plastic products, so they are shipped to the manufacturing plants and re-dissolved before being moulded into the final plastic product. It is expected that the “Made in Samoa pellets” will be sold to plastic recyclers and buyers at international markets.”
According to the statement, another final product is the casting of melted plastic into moulds to create new construction products such as 100% recycled plastic bricks.
They look forward to using these machines to introduce new recycled plastic products to the Samoan market in the near future.
