The Commissioner of Police has reaffirmed that only Police Officers are allowed to issue traffic citations on the main highway, under local laws.

Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo, made the comments in response to Radio Polynesia questions following concerns raised by members of the public to the Radio Station.

He said the legal authority has been removed from Land Transport Authority Traffic Officers as of July, 2021; however the vehicle registration and licensing and driver’s license was transferred back to the Land Transport Authority.

In December of 2021, Minister of Police and Prisons, Faualo Harry Schuster says the traffic division will remain with the Ministry of Police while the registration of vehicles will be transferred back to the Land and Transport Authority.

However, the law enforcement aspect of Traffic will remain under the umbrella of the police.
