Germany and the Independent State of Samoa have for over a century shared an important history together.
This was also reflected when 50 years ago on the 18th of May 1972 Germany became one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Samoa.
To commemorate and celebrate 50 Years of Diplomatic relations with support from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Wellington both the Primary Schools of Nofoalii and Paia will be getting floor tiles for the classrooms and other equipment.
Tagaloa Christa Szegedi German consul to Samoa explained “I am pleased today to announce as we commemorate 50 years of Diplomatic Relations between Germany and Samoa two new projects.
The projects we have announced today will ensure that the students of both schools will learn in a cleaner and germ-free environment which is vital during these Covid-19 times”.
It is through these diplomatic relations that Germany has over the years continued to support Samoa in the areas of climate change and recently with projects to help tackle Covid-19. These Covid-19 projects have aimed to improve sanitary facilities and hygienic standards at different schools in Samoa.
In 2021 five different schools in Samoa also hosted a German Film and Cultural Festival which was aimed at providing young children with more information and knowledge about Germany.
Germany also supports Samoa at the EU level by providing funds in the area of development cooperation as well as projects to promote renewable energy.
Tagaloa Christa Szegedi said: “Samoa continues to be an important partner for Germany as we work together to combat important issues like climate change.
As the German Consul to Samoa it is my hope that our two countries going forward continue to build on this important friendship and partnership we have achieved together”.
Associate Minister of Education Sports and Culture Agaseata Valelio Tanuvasa Peto stated: “the 50th anniversary of the close relationship between Germany and Samoa marks 50 years of assistance to Samoa from the Government of Germany.
There have been numerous development projects in which Germany has helped Samoa in the economy. One instance is the signing of the contract today between Nofoalii Primary School and German Embassy in Wellington to improve health in Samoan community.”
