Samoa pulled off their first-ever win in the HSBC Cape Town Sevens as well as a rare triumph on the Sevens circuit as they edged out New Zealand 12-7 in a tightly contested wet weather final on Sunday.
Supersport reported that it is rare indeed for it to rain in the Mother City at this time of year but after a humid day that was more redolent of Durban than Cape Town, it bucketed down just as the two finals, the women’s and the men’s, were about to kick off.
With large pools of water to navigate, it was always going to be hard for the players to play typical Sevens rugby, but they did their best.
And it was Samoa who was better at it.
They scored a try in the first half and were unlucky not to add another on the stroke of halftime, and then after the All Blacks scored a breakaway try they managed to break free off a penalty with just a minute and a half to go to score the try that sends them into delirium at the final whistle.
