Press Release, 27 November 2024– Samoa is intensifying its fight against human trafficking, with a key workshop bringing together government, law enforcement, and international partners to tackle this growing issue. Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and human rights violation, affecting millions globally, including in the Pacific Islands, where isolation and economic vulnerabilities make certain industries, like fishing, especially at risk.

With nearly 490,000 cross-border movements in 2023, Samoa faces rising threats, particularly as foreign fishing vessels and seasonal workers become new points of concern. The workshop, part of a broader regional initiative, aims to strengthen Samoa’s prevention strategies and improve collaboration across sectors.

The United Nations in Samoa, alongside key partners like the IOM, ILO, and UNODC, is committed to supporting the government’s efforts, aligning with international frameworks like the UN Protocol on Trafficking and the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, they are working to ensure safer, dignified conditions for workers and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

As the discussions continue, Samoa’s resolve to combat trafficking in persons is clear: protecting human dignity and upholding human rights remain top priorities.
