The United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa has announced that a resident Ambassador for Samoa will be appointed soon.
US Ambassador Tom Udall made the announcement recently at the Independence Day celebrations in Vailima on the Fourth of July.
Currently, the US Embassy in Apia is headed by a charge d’affaires. Udall said the US government has committed to appointing a resident US ambassador in Samoa.
The US has taken significant steps this year to increase its presence in the Pacific, including re-opening an embassy in Honiara, Solomon Islands and planning to establish one in Kiribati.
No date has been given for when the resident ambassador to Samoa will be named and arrive in Samoa.
