Twenty prisoners have tested positive for Covid-19 at the prison in Vaiaata Savai’i.

This was confirmed by Deputy Police Commissioner Leiataualesa Samuelu Afamasaga in an interview with Radio Polynesia.

As of last week, 20 of the 64 prisoners in Vaia’ata were tested in the prison and confirmed to be infected with the virus.

At the Tanumalala prison, Leitaualesa said initially they had 70 prisoners tested positive but most have recovered leaving only 18 infected at the moment.

There were 20 prisoners at Oloamanu that tested positive and have all recovered said Leiatualesa.

As reported earlier Acting Police Commissioner Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo says Tanumalala was Covid free until the prisoners attempted to break out of their cells.

The prisoners were exposed to Police Officers that responded and they suspect this is how the virus made its way into the Prisons.
