Threat of high seas and surfs subsides, in American Samoa

SHARE NOW

A gradual decrease in sea and surf heights has been recorded at the buoy, near Aunu’u in American Samoa. Although seas and surfs have subsided compared to Friday’s heights, the long period (15+ seconds) swell from the south continues to batter American Samoa’s coastlines today, through the new week.

Expect the high surf warning to gradually subside to an advisory by Saturday. Therefore, the high surf warning and small crafts advisory remains in effect through tonight.

However, as the threat of high seas and surfs subsides, the threat of strong trade winds is expected to impact the area this afternoon.

Model data as well as upper air atmospheric data, from earlier this morning, are suggesting winds of 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts from the east- southeast is to impact the territory today into tonight.

These wind strengths are associated with a high pressure system centered south-southeast of the region. Hence, the continuation of the wind advisory.
